Gluten-Free Greek Islands: Yoga Retreats, Taverna Dining & Celiac-Aware Resorts
Celiac guide to the Greek islands: safe taverna dishes, what to ask a yoga retreat before booking, and Ikos Aria's published gluten-free procedures on Kos.

Greece is a dream for crystal-clear Aegean water, whitewashed cliffside villages and ancient history. Traditional Greek food, with grilled lamb, fresh fish, Greek salads, tzatziki and olive oil, is naturally wholesome. Busy island tourist spots still carry cross-contact risks from shared bread baskets, fried calamari and flour-thickened sauces. As of our last check on 2026-Oct-20, we haven't found a permanently gluten-free yoga retreat on the islands we can recommend, so this page explains what to look for.
Greek Island Celiac Highlights
- Naturally safe staples: Grilled souvlaki (check the marinade), fresh whole fish with lemon and olive oil, horiatiki (Greek salad without barley rusks) and roast lamb are naturally gluten-free.
- Yoga retreats: Many small-group retreats on Kefalonia and other islands say they can cater gluten-free, but that often applies only during retreat weeks and in a shared villa kitchen. Ask the organizer whether the whole kitchen is gluten-free for your week, who cooks, and whether gluten-free phyllo and flours are brought in for dishes like spanakopita.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Greek salads safe for celiacs?
A traditional Greek salad (horiatiki) is tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, onion, feta and olives. Check that the taverna hasn't put a barley rusk (dakos or paximadi) underneath, which some places do.

How we check: each listing shows its kitchen tier and when we last checked it. "Confirmed" means the property answered our 10-point kitchen questionnaire in writing. Kitchens and menus change, so always tell the property about celiac disease before you arrive.
