The Caribbean is the home of the all-inclusive beach resort: palm-fringed sand, turquoise water and meals you don't have to plan. For travelers with celiac disease, though, big all-inclusives bring real cross-contact risk across sprawling buffets and multi-restaurant properties.

Large brands like Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts have a long record of handling gluten-free requests, according to guest reviews, while boutique hideaways like Hermitage Bay in Antigua cook to order for each guest. As of our last check on 2026-Oct-20, we couldn't find a published, physically separate gluten-free kitchen at any of them, so treat them as shared kitchens with allergy procedures. Practices also vary from one resort to the next within the same brand.

Caribbean Celiac Travel Realities

  • Resort buffets: Main buffets are the riskiest place to eat, because of shared tongs, dropped crumbs and open pastry stations. Ask for meals cooked to order in the kitchen instead.
  • Island sourcing: Smaller islands import most specialty foods, so gluten-free bread, pasta and tamari can run out. Ask the resort what it stocks, and pack backups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to notify Sandals or Beaches in advance of my celiac diagnosis?

Yes. Send your dietary requirements well before you arrive, ideally in writing, and ask for them to reach the chef at your specific resort. Then confirm again with the restaurant manager on your first day, because kitchens differ between properties.

How we check: each listing shows its kitchen tier and when we last checked it. "Confirmed" means the property answered our 10-point kitchen questionnaire in writing. Kitchens and menus change, so always tell the property about celiac disease before you arrive.
